Special meeting called to discuss ideas for Black History Month for February
2024
1. Land Acknowledgement
Pinder shared Clarington’s Land Acknowledgement
2. Black History Month Planning
Pinder provided an overview of the Black History Month events that Clarington and
the committee members had put together for February 2023 as reference to the
discussion.
Pinder shared one of the ideas being proposed by Clarington to celebrate Black
History Month in Feb 2024.
• Black Vendors Market/Village to be held on February 24 from 10am -5pm
approximately Rickard B. Arena; we have put a tentative hold on the 3 large
rooms at the arena.
• Vendors would be residents/businesses from Durham Region and as many as
possible from Clarington.
• No fee for vendors to register and participate in the event.
• There would be no food/food trucks.
• The event would be run in partnership with Clarington Library, Museum and
Archives and the Region of Durham.
• The library is looking at reading circles; Museum and Archives interested in
setting up an education/awareness booth.
Additional ideas proposed by committee members:
• Committee members would like to have their own booth at the event
• Reach out to the local Clarington schools to see if there are black youth artists,
musicians, singers etc. who would be interested in performing at the event.
• Tables that have professionals that highlight their businesses/careers –
example, DRPS, Lakeridge Health etc.
• Movie night with the library and a discussion can come from the movie.
• Highlight different businesses/artists throughout the month on social media.
All committee members agreed that this is an event that Clarington should move
forward with.
Attending committee members expressed interest in being part of the planning and
hosting.
Pinder will email the rest of the members as a pre-cursor to the Dec 6th meeting to
ask everyone to come prepared to discuss how they would like to be involved in the
planning and any other ideas they may have for how to celebrate throughout the
month.
Motion to move forward with the planning and hosting of the event.
Moved by Pranay and seconded by Carlene.
