John Levantis, City of Oshawa Marine Reserve Association (COMRA),
P.O. Box 841, Oshawa, L1H 7N1, advised Council that this Association was
founded in 1967 by boaters who felt a need for marine rescue in the area. During
the season of April to November of each year, COMRA provides first aid, rescue,
victim recovery for police, pollution control, towing services and public relations
in the area bounded by Ajax/Pickering in the west and Clarington in the east. He
stated that 10% to 20% of COMRA's calls come from the Clarington area,
however, Clarington provides only 5% of their funding. He is requesting that a
user fee of $1.00 for daily launches or $20.00 for seasonal mooring be imposed
and that Council increase its grant allocation to the Association to $5,000
through the 1996 budget process.
Greg Shea, 134 Cove Road, P.O. Box 338, Bowmanville, L1C 3L1, advised prior
to the meeting that he would not be addressing Council.
