Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. ) THAT report FD-9-93 be received for information.
1. BACKGROUND
1.1 This report covers the total calls for the third quarter of 1993.
1.2 During the third quarter the department responded to 302 calls of various
types. The largest of these calls was a structure fire at the old
Courtice Steel Plant, on September 15, 1993. This fire was a problem due
to the contents of the building.
1.3 A breakdown of the classification of responses for this quarter and
comparison, follows:

2. COMMENTS
2.1 The ambulance assist calls for this quarter were substantially higher than
for the same quarter last year. This may or may not be due to the impact
of the Social Contract. That is yet to be determined, but could have some
effect.
2.2 The total calls for the third quarter are up 31% over the same quarter of
last year, which is due in part to the increase in ambulance assist calls.
2.3 At the time this report was being prepared we were conducting open houses
at the fire halls for Fire Prevention Week. These open houses are
directed at the students, to make them aware of fire safety. During the
week, 606 students visited the fire stations.
3. RECOMMENDATIONS
3.1 It is respectfully recommended that Report FD-9-93 be received for
information.
