The largest of these calls was a structure fire at the old Courtice Steel Plant, on September 15, 1993. This fire was a problem due to the contents of the building. 1.3 A breakdown of the classification of responses for this quarter and comparison, follows: QUARTER YEAR QUARTER YEAR ENDING TO-DATE ENDING DATE 09/30/93 1993 09/30/92 1992 Structure fires 16 48 15 68 Vehicle fires 28 59 20 59 Check calls 17 58 8 43 Grass fires 13 44 1 38 Motor veh. accidents 33 74 14 44 Alarm activations 57 150 57 130 Medical assist calls 49 86 22 80 Burning complaints 29 84 38 80 Fuel spills -- 2 10 21 Chimney fires -- 27 1 27 Hydro wires down 4 29 2 9 Prop/Nat Gas leaks 5 10 8 11 Mutual Aid calls -- __ __ 1 Miscellaneous 51 86 34 98 Total Calls 302 757 230 709 Total Loss 618,112 t1,352,337 50,201 1,308,701 8 " Continued. . . . . . r ws rnrn F o ani accvneo rnoc q FD-9-93 - 2 - 2. COMMENTS 2.1 The ambulance assist calls for this quarter were substantially higher than for the same quarter last year. This may or may not be due to the impact of the Social Contract. That is yet to be determined, but could have some effect. 2.2 The total calls for the third quarter are up 31% over the same quarter of last year, which is due in part to the increase in ambulance assist calls. 2.3 At the time this report was being prepared we were conducting open houses at the fire halls for Fire Prevention Week. These open houses are directed at the students, to make them aware of fire safety. During the week, 606 students visited the fire stations. 3. RECOMMENDATIONS 3.1 It is respectfully recommended that Report FD-9-93 be received for information. Respectfully submitted, Approved for presentation to Committee Mi hael G. Crteig in, AMCT(A) , CMM1 r e Marano, Fire Chief. Acting Chief Administrative Officer. MC/sr October 13, 1993. I i
