Subject: QUARTERLY REPORT - JANUARY 1, 1993 - MARCH 31, 1993
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended:
THAT report FD-3-93 be received for information.
1. BACKGROUND
1. 1 This report covers the total calls for the first quarter of
1993. It includes all responses between January 1, 1993 and
March 31, 1993.
1.2 During this period there was one major call which involved a
barn fire on Mearns Avenue. The approximate fire loss for
this call was $250,000 .
1.3 An apartment fire at 69 King Street East, Bowmanville, on
March 31st resulted in $11,000 damage. The apartment was
unoccupied at the time of the fire.
1.4 The total of 167 calls is a decrease from the 213 calls
received for the same period last year or a decrease of 22%.

2 . COMMENTS
2 . 1 There would appear to be an increase in medical assist calls
over the same period last year. In 1993 we were called to
assist four times in January, five times in February and
thirteen times in March.
2 .2 . Although our assistance was required on the majority of these
calls there still appears to be some occasions where we are
not required. The increase in March could be due to the
change in supervisors at the Ambulance Dispatch Centre, which
recently took place.

2 . 3 The Regional Fire Chiefs are meeting with the ambulance
service supervisors on May 6, 1993 in an attempt to eliminate
the unnecessary calls throughout the Region of Durham. It is
a concern in all the municipalities in the Region. Although
it is improving, it still requires refinement.
3 . RECOMMENDATIONS
3. 1 It is respectfully recommended that Report FD-3-93 be received
for information.
