Recommendations: It is respectfully recommended: THAT Report FD-2-93 be received for information. 1. BACKGROUND 1. 1 This report covers the total calls responded to for the period of October 1, 1992 to December 31, 1992 . 1.2 During this period there were three (3) major fires. One occurred at the plaza on the corner of Prestonvale Road and Highway #2 . Charges have been laid in this case. The second was an accidental house fire on Lord Duncan Court, the cause was determined to be a match discarded in a waste basket. The third was a trailer fire at Cedar Park Trailer Park which completely destroyed a trailer home and the contents,, the cause was misuse of the igniting material. 1.3 The total calls for the calender year of 1992 was 933. This is down from 1079 calls for the calender year 1991 and represents a decline of approximately 13 .5%. Continued. . . . . . . . . . FD-2-93, Cont'd. - 2 - 1.4 The breakdown for calls for the period of October 1, 1992 to December 31, 1992 is as follows: Structure fires 20 Burning complaints 27 Vehicle fires 12 Fuel spills 3 Check calls 18 Chimney fires 12 Grass fires 6 Hydro wires down 15 Motor vehicle accidents 22 Prop./Nat. gas leaks 2 Alarm activations 45 Mutual Aid calls -- Medical assist calls 19 Miscellaneous calls 23 Total calls for period - 224 1.5 Total fire loss for this period was $433,360 . 1.6 The breakdown of calls for 1992 are as follows: Structure fires 88 Burning complaints 107 Vehicle fires 71 Fuel spills 24 Check calls 61 Chimney fires 39 Grass fires 44 Hydro wires down 24 Motor vehicle accidents 66 Prop. /Nat. gas leaks 13 Alarm activations 175 Mutual Aid calls 1 Medical assist calls 99 Miscellaneous calls 121 Total calls for 1992 - 933 1.7 Total fire loss for 1992 was $1,742,061. This compares to fire loss totals for 1991 of $2,283,930, or a reduction of approximately 24% . 1. 8 The calender year was seen to be a successful year in the Fire Department. Some of the accomplishments that we are very proud of include the Fire Safety House Program, our new Skills Centre Training Program, as well as the introduction of our Management Meetings which include both full and part-time officers. 1. 9 The completion of the Fire Marshal's survey has proposed several changes within the Department, that will be addressed once the review of the survey has been conducted. 1. 10 Education continues to be a key goal for the Department and we will continue to take advantage of training programs offered by the Fire Marshal's Office to insure that all department personnel are the best they can be. _ � � Continued. . . . . . . . . . COMMENTS 2 . 1 The Town of Newcastle Fire Department continues to strive for their goal, that goal being to provide public education and emergency services to the residents of the Town second to none. Life safety is the ultimate goal and will continue to be in the future. 2 .2 We will be working towards new and better programs aimed at the Town's youth as well as adult residents . Public education is the best possible means of fire prevention, and fire prevention reduces both loss of life and property from fire. 3. RECOMMENDATIONS 3 . 1 It is respectfully recommended that report FD-2-93 be received for information. Respectfully submitted, Approved for presentation to Committee Michael G.
