BACKGROUND 1. 1 The following is an account of the total calls responded to by the Town of Newcastle Fire Department from January 1st to March 31st, 1992, inclusive. 1.2 Of the total number of calls, there were some that were of substance. The fire at Dom's Auto Parts on March 20th involved the need to have firefighters on the scene for over 14 hours . 1. 3 It should be noted that fire of an incendiary nature accounted for six major calls in the first three months and also accounted for 56% of the total fire loss value for this period. 1.4 A breakdown of the classification of responses is as follows: Structure fires 33 Burning complaints 11 Vehicle fires 14 Fuel spills 6 Check calls 26 Chimney fires 22 Grass fires 8 Hydro wires down 2 Motor vehicles accidents 19 Prop/Nat. gas leaks 3 Alarm activations 34 Mutual Aid calls 1 Medical assist calls 19 Miscellaneous calls 15 TOTAL CALLS FOR PERIOD 213 Continued. . . . . . 8 0 1 FD2-92, Cont'd. - 2 - 1.5 The total fire losses for this period amounted to $799,500 . The major contributors to this amount were four of the calls, classified as incendiary, which totalled $400,000 . 1.6 Two of the calls classified as incendiary in nature, remain under investigation. 2 .
