DATE: APRIL 22, 1991.
REPORT #: FD 4-91 FILE #: 10. 12 . 6
SUBECT. EMERGENCY LIGHTING - CAR 1
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended:
1. ) THAT Report FD 4-91 be received; and
2 . ) THAT the proposed changes to the emergency lighting on
Car #1 be approved.
1. BACKGROUND
1. 1 In the 1991 budget discussions, approval was received
to purchase a new one ton pick up truck for the Fire
Department. Part of the equipment required for the new
truck is a light bar.
1.2 The existing light bar is a Smith and Wesson type,
which has been discontinued and for which replacement
parts are unavailable. It was decided, therefore, to
purchase a new light bar and to utilize the existing
light bar for replacement parts for the remaining four
Smith and Wesson light bars, which are on some of the
department's older vehicles . This would enable the
department to extend the life expectancy of these
light bars by having spare parts available for repairs .
1. 3 While reviewing the types of light bars available for
the new truck, it was suggested that consideration
should be given to the possibility of utilizing the
light bar from Car #1 for the new truck and installing
a small dashboard mounted emergency light in the car.
FD 4-91 - 2 -
1.4 A sample of such a light was obtained from our supplier
for a test to see if this was practical. It is documented
that a light mounted at this level has greater visibility
for cars which are being approached from the rear, as it
shines directly in the rear window. Many of the provincial
police vehicles are going to this type of light, both for
visibility when approaching, as well as improved gas mile-
age due to less wind resistance.
1.5 The cost of such a proposal was also given consideration
with the resulting information showing that a sizeable
savings to the Town would be realized. The cost of a
light bar for the new truck, similar to the light bar on
Car #1, would be $1,945 plus taxes, while the small dash-
board mounted emergency light for Car #1 would cost $129 .00,
plus taxes. This would result in a savings of $1,816 . 00 .
2 CONCLUSION
2 . 1 It is therefore respectfully recommended that Report FD 4-
91 be received.
2 .2 That the light bar from Car #1 be removed and installed on
the new pick up truck, when received.
2 . 3 That a small dashboard mounted emergency light be purchased
and installed in Car #1.
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
to Committee
