ROLL CALL Present Were: Mayor D. Hamre Councillor 1. Mutton Councillor M. Novak Councillor 1. Rowe Councillor 1. ScheU Councillor C. Trim Councillor T. Young Also Present: Acting Chief Administrative Officer, M. Marano Fire Chief, M. Creighton Director of Public Works, S. Vokes Director of Planning and Development, F. Wu Clerk, P. Barrie '- DISCLOSURE OF PECUNIARY INTEREST There were no disclosures of pecuniary interest indicated at this meeting. The special meeting of Council was convened to discuss the storage oflow-Ievel radioactive waste material of the Port Granby site. Peter Brown and David MacAuley, representing the Ministry of Natural Resources and Alex Sheppard, M.P., were in attendance to discuss this matter with CounciL Peter Brown provided a brief history to the Members. He indicated that the waste dates back to the 1960' s at the Port Granby Site and the Ministry is presently under decommissioning orders. '- Special Council Minutes - 2 - November 23, 1998 \"... In 1988, an independent task force known as the Siting Task Force, was appointed, with a mandate to find a site within Ontario to store the low-level radioactive waste from Port Granby, Port Hope and Hope Township. Deep River became a volunteer host, however, an agreement between the Town and Cabinet, could not be reached. Presently, local solutions are being investigated for all three municipalities. Mr. Brown indicated that Port Hope is proceeding with the process. Questions were asked ofMr. Brown with respect to transportation, a single site versus numerous sites, barrier, future wastes and safety. Mayor Hamre reported of a meeting between herself, the Mayor of Port Hope and a representative of Cameco, with respect to waste which Cameco has created since the Port Granby Site closed in the 1980's. She questioned whether the Federal Government is aware of Came co's position with respect to the property which they own adjacent to the Port Granby Site. \"... Harvey Thompson, Chair, Port Granby Monitoring Committee, thanked Council for hosting this meeting and indicated the Committee's willingness to work with Council and the Federal government on this project.
