In 1988, an independent task force known as the Siting Task Force,
was appointed, with a mandate to find a site within Ontario to store
the low-level radioactive waste from Port Granby, Port Hope and
Hope Township. Deep River became a volunteer host, however,
an agreement between the Town and Cabinet, could not be
reached. Presently, local solutions are being investigated for all
three municipalities. Mr. Brown indicated that Port Hope is
proceeding with the process.
Questions were asked ofMr. Brown with respect to transportation,
a single site versus numerous sites, barrier, future wastes and
safety.
Mayor Hamre reported of a meeting between herself, the Mayor of
Port Hope and a representative of Cameco, with respect to waste
which Cameco has created since the Port Granby Site closed in the
1980's. She questioned whether the Federal Government is aware
of Came co's position with respect to the property which they own
adjacent to the Port Granby Site.
