REPORT NO.: cSD-07-04 PAGE 2 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 On Monday April 19, 2004 Margaret Plackitt, Canadian Calendar Girls Inc. appeared before General Purpose and Administration Committee to introduce their fund raising project in support of the Durham Regional Cancer Centre. Ms. Plackitt was also appealing for financial support from the municipality for seed money to assist in the start up costs of their fund raising project. Committee referred to request to staff for comment. 2.0 COMMENTS 2.1 The Canadian Calendar Girts Inc. is a volunteer organization spearheaded by Durham Region cancer survivors and their families, with the goal of producing an annual calendar and generating funds through its sale to support the Durham Regional Cancer Centre. The calendar would feature local cancer survivors, 2.2 This project is worthwhile and commendable, and does qualify for a Municipal Grant under the category of 'Social': "those organizations offering specific service (other than recreational/leisure) to the residents of the Municipality of Clarington," The efforts of the Canadian Calendar Girls Inc. will most certainly offer a specific service to residents of the Municipality of Clarington by providing an opportunity for local cancer survivors to participate in the battle against cancer. 2.3 At the meeting of March 22, 2004, Council approved the 2004 Municipal Grant Report and allocated $64,900.00 in funding in support of various initiatives presented by local community groups. The total grant funds identified in 2004 Operating Budget is $76,000.00. There remains a total of $11 ,100. 00 available in the 2004 Municipal Grant Allocation to address further requests Council may receive throughout the year and which fall within the criteria for funding under the Municipal Grant Policy. If Council approves the request for seed money from the Canadian Calendar Girls, there are currently sufficient funds available for that purpose.
