Res. 4j- - I„O
By -law #
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report No. CS -17 -00 be received for information.
1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 The Municipalities of Durham Region hosted Ontario Summer Games 2000 from
August 10 — 13, 2000. The Municipality of Clarington participated in the games,
hosting Men's Soccer at Darlington Sports Fields and Men's Baseball at both Soper
Creek Park and Harvey Jackson Park.
1.2 Staff from the Community Services Department served on both the Executive and
Management Committees, representing the our Municipality.
1.3 Under the terms of the Province's Games Contract, a final report must be prepared
by the Executive Committee for submission to the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture
and Recreation. This report will not be ready within the term of this current
Council. As such, the Community Services Department is providing a brief
summary of the Games held in August. A detailed, final report will be forthcoming
when the information is made available.
2.0 COMMENT
2.1 Staff is pleased to report to Council that the Ontario Summer Games 2000 were a
success for the athletes and participating communities. For the first time in the
Province of Ontario, nine participating municipalities pooled their resources to offer
the games. (Previously, a single municipality would host the games.)

PAGE 2
This was also the first time the Ontario Summer Games were combined with the
Disable Games for fully integrated Games. Planning for the Games started in the
fall of 1997.
2.2 Traditionally, the Games are run entirely by community volunteers. It should be
noted that nearly 1625 volunteers from the various communities assisted the
Management Committee in the operation of the games. There were 175 volunteers
who registered with the Games Committee from Clarington alone. (see attachment
#1)
2.3 In addition, several staff members from the Municipality assisted locally with the
games. The Community Services Department would acknowledge the assistance of
every department within the municipality in one form or another. The assistance
from the various departments ranged from the loan of specialized equipment to
provision of labour and expertise in maintaining and operating facilities and venues
during the games. (see attachment #2)
2.4 The Games Organizing Committee would also recognize the assistance and
cooperation of each of the participating municipalities in providing financial
support and staff resources prior to and during the games. The Committee was
appreciative of Council support and participation during the many events and
presentations on behalf of the visiting athletes. (see attachment #3)
2.5 The Games could not have been held without the financial support of the Province,
local Municipalities and major corporate sponsors who, in addition the countless
local sponsors, provided funding and guidance for the games. Special thanks to:
Tim Horton's Rogers Group of McDonald's Restaurants
Restaurants Companies
General Motors of Ontario Power Generation Idea People
Canada
2.6 As indicated, the final report will not be available until later this year. At that time,
the report will include a summary of all committee activities, venue reports and a
detailed financial report of the games.
Respectfully submitted,
of Community Services

Just a short note from the Games Organizing Committee to thank you and your Council for the
tremendous support received from the outset of the Games bid to the Closing Ceremonies held
on Sunday, August 13th. Without your enthusiasm and support, obviously the Games could
never have been the success they turned out to be.
We would also like to add our appreciation for the commitment made by your municipal staff
with their involvement in staging the Games, along with the tedious effort of cleaning up the
aftermath.
