Meeting: General Purpose and Administration Committee File #_
Date: September 18, 2000 Res. #Ga6
Report #: CS -14 -00 By -law #
Subject: KIDS OF STEEL TRIATHLON
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report No. CS -14 -00 be received for information.
1.0 BACKGROUND
1.1 Over the past six years, the Municipality of Clarington has hosted the Kids of Steel
Triathlon event. Kids of Steel is a multi -sport event sponsored to offer kids from 7 -
18 years of age an opportunity to participate in a triathlon (swimming, biking,
running). Traithlons continue to grow in popularity with their inception into the
2000 Olympic Games in Australia. The Municipality of Clarington is pleased to be
an enthusiastic partner in the growth and development of Kids of Steel Triathlon.
With the growing costs to operate such an event, the Ontario Association of
Triathletes was able to capture sponsorship from the Canadian Institute of Steel
Construction for all Kids of Steel Events in Ontario. This new found sponsorship
provides all participants medallions at the finish line plus all event bathing caps.
This event was a success for participants, volunteers, and sponsors and centred once
again at the Courtice Community Complex. This was the sixth Annual Clarington
Kids of Steel Triathlon and attracted 154 young athletes ranging in age from 7 - 18
years and from areas across Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland. Thirty-eight
(38 %) of participation came directly from Clarington and our surrounding
municipalities of Durham Region.
1.2 The success of the 2000 event was directly related to the following: a dedicated
team of volunteers consisting of Municipality of Clarington employees and residents
of the community; a challenging yet safe course in the pool and on the road,
Municipal and Regional support regarding road closure, event set -up and access to
both facilities and equipment.

Hill Farms, Shoppers Drug Mart, Impala Cycles, Zellers, Williams
Telecommunications, Tim Hortons, Milky Way, Durham Regional Police, National
Sports, Saan, IGA, Coca Cola, Dairy Queen, Burger King, Bicycles Plus and
Cineplex Odeon.
1.4 The overall feedback from competitors, volunteers, spectators and local residents
was very positive. The Ontario Association of Triathletes continues to recognize the
Municipality of Clarington Kids of Steel Triathlon as being one of the most
organized events in the circuit. Due to this fact, the 2000 event was also named as
host of the Ontario /Quebec Challenge which attracted 17 competitors from Quebec
and one from Newfoundland.
2.0 COURTICE COMMUNITY COMPLEX HEADQUARTERS
2.1 The race headquarters which was located at the Courtice Community Complex
provided direct access from Highway #401 and excellent exposure for our facility in
Courtice. The Courtice Community Complex created excellent viewing during the
pool portion of the race, an excellent transition area in the parking lot and the hall
served well as the meeting area and facility for the awards ceremony.
3.0 THE EVENT
3.1 Highlights of the event included: a 25 metre pool setting for the swim, bike course
on a closed paved road with climbing hills and run course of relatively flat terrain,
race kits with sponsor gift donations, promotional material, event t -shirt, event
bathing cap and after race meal ticket consisting of pizza and pop. This year we also
received complementary bagels and cream cheese from Canadian Bagel and coffee
from Williams Coffee Pub. Fresh fruit was provided by A & P which was enjoyed by
all participants, parents and volunteers.
4.0 ROUTE
4.1 Careful consideration was given to ensure a safe, competitive but fun course.
Volunteers and event officials were stationed along the course to ensure the safety
and proper direction of all participants.
4.2 The Courtice Community Complex pool is 25 metres which allowed six participants
per heat (one in each lane), with two minutes between each heat and a fifteen
minute stagger between each age group. This system allowed for safety of all
participants. The bike and run course consisted of various distances starting and
finishing at the Courtice Community Complex. Distances varied depending on the
age of the athlete.
