Res. #1!ti:;;J!f--117tJJ
Meeting: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
By-law #
Subject: PUBLIC INFORMATION NIGHT -
MUNICIPAL BOARDS AND COMMITTEES
It is respectfully recommended lhat the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to
Council the following:
THAT Report CD-51-00 be received for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT
With each new term of Council, the municipality makes appointments to various boards and committees.
Nearing the end of a Council term, an advertisement is placed in the local papers requesting applications
from interested parties. The appointments are considered during the first Committee meeting scheduled in
January, with the exception of the Public Library Board. In accordance with the Public Libraries Act, these
appointments are made at Council's inaugural meeting.
---
In order for residents to learn about the mandate and responsibilities of each of the committees, a public
information night is being held on November 29, 2000 at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex,
beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Chairman of each committee will be invited to the information session,
together with the staff member who works closely with the board/committee. The intention of the session
is to provide information to and answer questions from interested applicants prior to the deadline of
submitting applications. Notice of the information session will be included in the advertisement seeking
applications,
Because some of the boards/committees have been in existence for many years, while others are
relatively new, there exists some inconsistency with the procedures in appointing the boards and with the
way in which the business is conducted. Staff is reviewing matters such as staff liaison to the boards,
staggering appointments to provide for some consistency on the boards, limiting the number of terms an
individual can serve on a board and review of applications. A report will be presented to Council early in
the new term ssing these matters.
