It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report CD-36-00 be received;
2. That staff be authorized to purchase the necessary Adaptation Kits for the on street
meters; and
3. That funds be drawn from the parking Reserve Account #111 0-162-X to cover the
cost.
BACKGROUND
As part of a cost saving measure, the Canadian Mint will begin circulation of new alloy
plated, steel core coins for 1<<1:, 5<1, 10<1, 25<1, 50<1 pieces. These coins will have a different
"electronic signature" from their existing counterparts.
The electronic meters currently will not identify these new coins as valid currency. It is
therefore necessary to reconfigure all the on-street meters. The company which made the
meters, Mackay Meters have produced an "adapter kit" for the meters which cost $25.00
per unit. The Municipality has a total of 184 electronic meters. The total cost of the units
will be $4600 plus taxes and may require a service call from the manufacturer.
Staff are therefore requesting that the cost of the conversion plus any applicable service
costs be drawn from the Parking Reserve Fund.
