THE CORPORATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON REPORT Meeting: General Purpose and Administration Committee Date: October 2, 2000 File#: Res.ttfdJ/I--'6J- -0 0 Report #: TR-64-00 File #: By-Law #: Subject: STATUS OF THE COURTICE COMMUNITY COMPLEX FUNDRAISING Recommendations: It is respectfully recommended the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1. THAT TR-64-00 be received for information; and 2. THAT the Build Courtice Committee be thanked for their efforts. Background: In July 1994, Council authorized a $50,000 interest free loan to the Courtice Community Complex Fundraising Committee. The interest free loan was for the start-up funds to initiate the fund raising campaign for the construction of the Courtice Community Complex. The Courtice Fundraising Committee was to repay the interest free loan from their fundraising efforts. In 1996, the Courtice Community Complex Fundraising Committee received their Charitable Organization number from the Province for the "Build Courtice" campaign. The Committee anticipated their fundraising goal to be $500,000. In July 1997, the Municipality of Clarington received its first fundraising funds of $50,000 from the Build Courtice Campaign. The $50,000 from the Build Courtice Campaign was used to repay the interest free loan. In June 2000, the Municipality received the final fund raising funds of $13,739 from the Build Courtice Committee. As stated in the letter from H.E. Horricks, Treasurer of the Build Courtice Committee, there is a possibility of a $20,000 pledge from a local area builder/developer and if the pledge is honoured, will be paid directly to the Municipality. Please refer to Attachment "A". 818 Report TR-64-00 STATUS OF THE COURTICE COMMUNITY COMPLEX FUNDRAISING Page 2 The Build Courtice Committee has in total forwarded to the Municipality $188,739 from their fundraising efforts including the $50,000 interest free loan repayment. In reviewing these financial statements, you will notice that at the end of the year we wrote off a total amount of $29,433 in pledges that were deemed to be uncollectible at this point in time despite our various efforts to collectthese outstanding pledges, Included in this amount is one pledge of$20,000 from a local area builder/developer who has indicated to us that he may still honour his pledge depending on various factors. If he does honour the pledge, he will pay it directly to the Municipality rather than to Build Courtice. With the completion of this year end, there is very little left outstanding related to the work of Build Courtice, and I shall be instructing our coordinator to prepare a cheque transferring the remaining monies on hand of $13,739 to the Municipality within the next couple of weeks. Should you have any questions regarding the financial statements, please give me a call at 721- 3500. Sincerely yours, ~. -- .E. Horricks, C.G.A., P.Adm. Much of the funds raised were through the sale of the bricks that were to be placed in this recognition wall. Failure to complete the wall has become an embarrassment to the many volunteers who worked very hard for this campaign. We ask that this final cheque be put towards the cost of completing the recognition wall.
