INFORMATION
TO: Chairman, & Members Community Services Committee
FROM: J. Haymam, Area Fire Chief
DATE: July 17, 1978
SUBJECT: C.P. & C.N. Railway - Right of way
For the period from May 1977 to June 1978 there were
28 fire calls to the C.P. and C.N. Railway Right of way. Due to
the heavy growth of grass and brush, also a very large number of
discarded railway tiesq considerable time and money is involved.
During the week-end there 3 separate fire alarms to the C.P. tracks,
south of Newtonville, the first alarm Saturday July 15, 1978
involved all three fire stations with remuneration cost of personnel
and fuel of approximately $ 19500. The department personnel and
equipment was in use from 15:00 hrs. to 20:30 hrs. leaving the
area very short handed and without tanker trucks and pumper.
There has been considerable correspondence and meetings
between the parties with requests to clean up this fire hazard,
to date no action has been taken by the Railways.
In my opinion these calls are due to careless maintenance
of railway property and action should be taken to correct these
hazards.
