CSD-06-01 Page 2 - 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 The Municipality will be completing the expansion of the Courtice Community Complex Fitness Centre in late fall of this year. When originally opened in 1997, the Courtice Community Complex offered a 1,000 square foot fitness facility with limited cardio and conditioning equipment. The purpose of the fitness facility was to offer the community residents the opportunity to participate in a fitness program, which included access to the Courtice Community Complex pool. Since that time, membership and use of the fitness area has grown. 1.2 In response to members' requests and to maintain a viable operation within the community, Council recently approved a major expansion to the Courtice Community Complex. This 14,640 square foot expansion includes a 5,000 square foot fitness floor complete with the latest design Cardio and Conditioning Equipment. In addition, there will be a 3,000 square foot Aerobics Studio in which various exercise programs will be offered. Other amenities include a fitness testing area as well as Members Change Room facilities. 1.3 Residents continue to be interested in fitness, exercise, nutrition, wellness and healthy lifestyles. In addition to individual memberships, a number of local business have subscribed to corporate memberships to encourage their employees to participate in healthy lifestyles, based on the premise of healthy bodies lead to healthy minds and peak perfonmance. Accordingly, as part of the membership drive, full time Municipal staff are encouraged to join the Fitness Training Centre. ' 2.0 STAFF MEMBERSHIPS 2.1 As an incentive to join the Fitness Training Centre, it is recommended that all full- time Municipal Employees receive a one-time 3-month membership at no charge. 2.2 All other staff would be eligible for the Corporate Rate discount of 25%. 2.3 These discounts, would be for fitness membership categories only, all other fitness services (Fitness Assessments and Appraisals as well as Personal Training etc) would remain at the rates previously approved by Council. 4.0 CONCLUSION 4.1 As a responsible employer, the Municipality would encourage all employees to practice healthy lifestyles, which includes fitness, exercise, nutrition, and wellness. Employees who actively practice with these lifestyles will enjoy healthier living and will be more productive in the workplace. In the long-term, this program will offer benefits to both the employee and the Municipality.
