2.2 Community/Government Liaison
The Economic Development Officer met with business representatives of the Clarington
Business Group and attended the GM President's Dinner and Chamber of Commerce
(Clarington branch) Grand Opening in April.
Five meetings involving the Greater Toronto Area Economic Development Partnership
were attended. After the success of the Society of Automotive Engineers trade show in Detroit,
the Economic Development Officer has been regularly attending meetings of the Partnership's
Steering Committee. At a meeting held in April, the Economic Development Officer was asked
to chair the Environment Sector Committee for the GTA Partnership. This involvement has
provided access to a strong network of contacts and information for Clarington. More
involvement in GTA Economic Development Partnership activities is expected to provide an
even higher return on economic development dollars spent by the Municipality.
Co-operation with neighbouring Durham Region economic development offices
continues. Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington's offices sponsored a Research and Development
Seminar attended by sixty local businesses on April 6. The seminar was also co-sponsored by
Revenue Canada, Deloitte & Touche and Braithwaite Consulting. Participants learned about
the investment tax credit program and other government initiatives to assist in research and i
development.
A meeting of the Economic Development Offices of Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington,
along with the Canadian Bankers Association, the Oshawa and District Chamber of Commerce
and other groups was attended. The meeting was held to plan a small business seminar for May
i
25th. The seminar entitled, A Partner In Your Success" is designed to help local
entrepreneurs to start or expand their businesses by learning more about bank lending rationale
i
etc..
