THAT Report ADMIN-20-95 be received for information. 1. PURPOSE 1.1 This report summarizes the activities of the Economic Development Office for the period April 3 - May 1, 1995. 2. ACTIVITY UPDATE i 2.1 Information Requests A total of twenty-four requests for information were serviced by the office during this period. Requests for development information from existing businesses and the general public represented the majority of requests (11). Eight requests for information about starting a new business and five requests for commercial & industrial space information were also serviced during this period. � i01 PAPE„ _1I TH61 PR:NIEDa!PEGYCLED PAPER Report ADMIN-20-95 Page 2 2.2 Community/Government Liaison The Economic Development Officer met with business representatives of the Clarington Business Group and attended the GM President's Dinner and Chamber of Commerce (Clarington branch) Grand Opening in April. Five meetings involving the Greater Toronto Area Economic Development Partnership were attended. After the success of the Society of Automotive Engineers trade show in Detroit, the Economic Development Officer has been regularly attending meetings of the Partnership's Steering Committee. At a meeting held in April, the Economic Development Officer was asked to chair the Environment Sector Committee for the GTA Partnership. This involvement has provided access to a strong network of contacts and information for Clarington. More involvement in GTA Economic Development Partnership activities is expected to provide an even higher return on economic development dollars spent by the Municipality. Co-operation with neighbouring Durham Region economic development offices continues. Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington's offices sponsored a Research and Development Seminar attended by sixty local businesses on April 6. The seminar was also co-sponsored by Revenue Canada, Deloitte & Touche and Braithwaite Consulting. Participants learned about the investment tax credit program and other government initiatives to assist in research and i development. A meeting of the Economic Development Offices of Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington, along with the Canadian Bankers Association, the Oshawa and District Chamber of Commerce and other groups was attended. The meeting was held to plan a small business seminar for May i 25th. The seminar entitled, A Partner In Your Success" is designed to help local entrepreneurs to start or expand their businesses by learning more about bank lending rationale i etc.. 02 I Report ADMIN-20-95 Page 3 Three business visitations were made in April. Visitations occur on a regular basis in order to gather information of importance to the business community and to outline the services of the office. The Economic Development Officer visited Deighton & Associates, the Oshawa Harbour Commission and the Royal Bank (Bowmanville). 2.3 Advertising/Media Liaison No mentions of economic development activities were covered by media during this period. No advertising was purchased during this period. 2.4 Known New Businesses The economic development office became aware of one new business during this period. The Country Goose opened in Bowmanville. Easton's 115 Service Centre has been renamed G. 1. 115 Service Centre and is under new management. 2.5 Other Staff of the Economic Development Office have been participating in the Total Quality Management sessions provided for municipal staff. Staff of the office also attended a Corel Ventura training seminar in April. 3. SUMMARY A summary of the month's activities is charted below.
