By-Law#
Report#: ADMINile#14-94
Subject: 15TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL ELEPHANT CONFERENCE
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that Council adopt the following:
1. That Report ADMIN. 14-94 be received;
2 . That an amount of $1,000 be provided to the Bowmanville Zoo in
support of a reception for attendees of the International
Elephant Conference that will be visiting Clarington on
September 30th 1994;
3. That funds be made available from the Unclassified
Administration Contingency Account #7007-X-0298 .
4. That Mr. Michael Hackenberger of the Bowmanville Zoo be
advised of Council's decision.
BACKGROUND:
The office of the Chief Administrative Officer was recently
contacted by Mr. Michael Hackenberger of the Bowmanville Zoo
advising that, in recognition of the Zoo's 75th anniversary, it
would be hosting a luncheon on September 30th, in conjunction with
the 15th Elephant Conference taking place in the Greater Toronto
Area over the week ending October 1st 1994.
Over 250 delegates from North America, Europe, Africa and Asia will
be attending this meeting which in the past has been held in major
centres such as Dallas, San Francisco, Milwaukee and Calgary. The
Bowmanville Zoo is participating in the hosting of this event along
with the Metro Toronto Zoo and the African Lion Safari. j
It is planned that on September 30th, 200 delegates will attend the
Bowmanville Zoo for a tour of the facility as well as an outside
venison luncheon. The luncheon is to be catered by a Clarington
firm and the cost will exceed the amount of $1,000 .

It is recommended that the Municipality donate the amount of $1,000
to support the proposed luncheon. We see this as not only a good
opportunity to promote Clarington at the international level, but
it will also provide business to the local community.
Council will recall that earlier this year an amount of $1,500 was
given to support the 1996 Municipal Law Enforcement Officers
Association Annual Conference to be held in Durham Region, as well
as $1,500 given to the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police
Annual Conference that was held in Durham Region.
Respectfully submitted,
W. H. Stockwell,
Chief Administrative Officer
