SUB.ECT:
HIRING A CURATOR - CLARKE MUSEUM AND ARCHIVES
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that:
1 . Report #ADMIN. 3 - 87 be received for information.
REPORT
Further to various discussions regarding the issue of hiring a curator for
the Clarke Museum and Archives, a letter has been received from Mr. D. Barnett
in this regard (refer to Attachment #1) .
Mr. Barnett's correspondence indicates the various reasons which led the
Board of the Clarke Museum and Archives to conclude that it would be most
economical and efficient for this facility to have its own Curator.
Furthermore, I have been informed that the Board at its meeting of March 2nd 1987
has made a selection in this regard and is prepared to make an offer of
ADMIN. 3 - 87 -2-
employment to a specific candidate from the Peterborough area.
This matter has been brought to the attention of members of Council
since an offer of employment from the Board will be forthcoming.
Respectfully submitted,
I

Dear Sir ;
This is to conf irm our telephone conversation of February 17 , 1987.
At that time you had no confirmation on a date for a meeting with
Council on what their decision would be on continuing Clarke Museum
and Archives. The meeting with Council was to have been held before
February 4 .
It was decided by the Board that we continue with the hiring of a
curator as we were already in motion when we received the letter from
Council at the end of the month and had gone too far to stop. Now the
personnel committee has made a selection and is taking it to the Board
on March 2.
There are reasons why we don't think that one curator for two museums
would work out well. At one time we had two galleries open at the
same time and we found we needed triple the staff. The curator could
not supervise either site on a satisfactory basis. Also, transport-
ation for the curator was expensive and she had very little time for
other work, planning , layout, etc., and all the other details of
running two separate galleries.
If Council decided to have one curator to supervise the two or more
museums they would need to hire a person with a degree in Business
Administration and working knowledge of restoration and storage of
artifacts. All our applicants had university degrees in one area or
another and were working on a curator ' s qualification .
All this information included here was given to you as well as to
Diane Hamre and Frank Stapleton before February 17. This letter is
just a summary.
n Yours truly,
N " Barnett
