Subject: SCHEDULES COMPOST COLLECTION AND BLUE BOX AND GARBAGE
COLLECTIONS DURING THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report WD-82-92 be received for information.

REPORT
1.0 BACKGROUND
1. 1 The contract with Browning Ferris Industries for garbage
collection provides for collection from Tuesday to Friday
inclusive. Since most statutory holidays are on a Monday, in
most cases there is no change to collection schedules because
of statutory holidays . It also provides for a time for
special collections such as yard wastes .
1.2 This year since Canada Day was on a Wednesday, the collection
for the Wednesday route was advanced to Monday, June 29 .
1. 3 The change in the collection day from Wednesday to Monday was
advertised in the local newspapers . However, a large number
of residents did not see the notice and there were many
complaints received from the public about the change in the
collection day. From this experience, it is concluded that
schedules should not be changed such that the collection day
is before the regular collection day.

2.0 REVIEW AND COMMENT
2 . 1 Compost Collection
The 1992 collection of leaves, brush and garden waste will
commence on Monday, October 26 and will be continued to be
collected weekly only on Mondays up to and including Monday,
November 30 . Collection will be from 7 :00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Leaves and garden wastes must be in clear plastic bags and
must be no heavier than 50 pounds . Brush must be tied in
bundles not to exceed four feet in length and not be heavier
than 50 pounds .
2 .2 Christmas Holiday Collection
The Brock West Landfill Site will be closed Friday, December
25, 1992; Monday, December 28, 1992 and on Friday, January 1,
1993 .
This year, garbage collection which would normally be on
Friday, December 25, will be on Saturday, December 26 . The
collection of the recyclables in blue boxes will not be
affected because it does not occur on this week.
Garbage and recyclables which would normally be collected on
Friday, January 1, 1993, will be collected on Monday, January
4, 1993 .
2 . 3 Special Christmas Tree Collection

A special collection of Christmas trees will be held on
Monday, January 11.

2 .4 Notice to Residents of the Schedules
Notices will be placed in the local newspapers advising the
public of the schedules . Also, notices will be hand delivered
to the residences in the area where garbage collection would
normally be collected on Friday, December 15 .
