REPORT NO.: CLD-010-o1 PAGE 2 BACKGROUND AND COMMENT The Clarington Animal Shelter Staff and members of the Animal Advisory Committee have identified a need to educate Grade 2 and 3 students on "Dog Bite Prevention". The letter attached to Report CLD-01 0-01 as Attachment #1 will be forwarded to the school boards/schools as an introduction to this Program. An excellent, reader friendly, "Dog Bite Prevention" brochure was created by Tom Vendrasco, Municipal Law Enforcement Officer, during his tenure as Animal Services Officer with the Town of Georgina and we have customized this pamphlet to meet Clarington's requirements. A copy is included as Attachment #2. It is our intention to circulate these pamphlets to the young students to take home. Authorization is requested from Council to access Account #1110-207 -X for the cost of printing 5,000 pamphlets. The Animal Advisory Committee has reviewed this report and concurs with the recommendations. It is therefore recommended: 1. THAT Report CLD-010-01 be received; 2. THAT Staff be authorized to proceed, in conjunction with the Animal Advisory Committee, to administer a "Dog Bite Prevention Program" in Clarington's elementary schools; and 3. THAT Staff be authorized to access Account #1110-207 -X, in the amount of $1,019.00, for the printing of 10,000 "Dog Bite Prevention" pamphlets to be distributed to the students for this purpose. Following the tragic death of little Courtney Trempe who was attacked by a dog, one of the Coroner's Jury's recommendations is that the Ministry of Education require all Ontario Boards of Education to implement a student education program in elementary schools for the prevention of dog bites and the better understanding of animal behaviour. As part of our goals for the year 2001, we have identified a strong need for educating the general public in the area of "responsible pet ownership". We discussed several alternatives on how to best address this issue and have concluded that educating the children is a major step in the right direction. We request your permission to set up a "Responsible Pet Ownership Workshop" in each of your elementary schools as outlined below: WORKSHOP . Duration of Workshop: Approximately 30 minutes . Who would attend?: Children in Grades 2 and 3 . Location of Workshop: School gymnasium . The Workshop will be facilitated by one member of Staff of the Clarington Animal Shelter and one member of the Animal Advisory Committee . One or two therapy dogs (these dogs are very gentle dogs and are trained for this purpose) . Facilitators will describe, in detail, the do's and don'ts of pet handling and ownership . Children will approach and pet the dog/s . Children will be given the opportunity to ask questions . Responsible Pet Ownership colouring book and brochure will be presented to the children We look forward to your positive response and to embark on our pet education program. 816 CORPORATION OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON 40 TEMPERANCE STREET BOWMANVllLE.
