ENG., DIRECTOR HAMPTON,ONTARIO TEL.(416)263-2231 LOB 1J0 987-5039 REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF SEPTEMBER 27, 1982. REPORT NO. WD-77-82. SUBJECT: VILLAGE OF ORONO - STREET CLEANING. RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended: 1 . That this report be received, and; 2. That a copy of Report WD-77-82 be forwarded to Mrs. Susan M. Sawyer, Secretary, Orono Central Business Improvement Area. BACKGROUND: Main Street, through the Village of Orono, is under the jurisdiction of the Regional Municipality of Durham, being Regional Road No. 17. The Town sweeps the road to quality standards determined by the Region, at their cost. During 1982 Main Street has been swept on four occasions, the most recent being on September 2nd, last. From discussions with the Secretary of the Orono Central Business Imp- rovement Area, it was agreed that Mrs. Sawyer would arrange that no cars would be parked on Main Street at 7:00 a.m. , on the day it was scheduled for sweeping. However, despite these prior arrangements, the equipment did have to navigate around parked cars. J WD-77-82 _ 2 REPORT: Main Street, Orono, presents a particular problem in that it is under the jurisdiction of the Region of Durham and, unlike the central areas of the Town of Bowmanville and the Village of Newcastle, the are no times during a twenty-four hour period when parking is prohibited, thus facilitating street sweeping and other maintenance operations. Pursuant to the complaint of the Orono Central Business Improve- ment Area, this Department has written to the Region of Durham asking that consideration be given to imposing parking restrictions on Main Street so that sweeping can be performed without hinderance. From subsequent discussions with Regional Staff, it is anticipated that movable parking restriction signs will be provided so that they can be erected the night before sweeping is to take place, and removed upon completion of the operation. Staff has discussed the above with Mrs. Sawyer, who is in agreement with the approach; apparently the Orono Central B. I.A. was satisfied with the sweeping done on September 2nd. , and has requested that the operation be repeated monthly. This can be done to the extent of the funds and authorization received from the Region of Durham. Respectfully submitted, zl_' - R.G. Dupuis, P. Eng. , Director of Public Works. September 14, 1982.
