CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE V PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT / HAMPTON, ONTARIO LOB 1J0 TELEPHONE (416)263-2292 REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF MARCH 22, 1982. REPORT NO. WD-21-82. SUBJECT: PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT - VACATIONS 1982. RECOMMENDATION: It is respectfully recommended: 1 . That this report be received, and; 2. That, with the exception of one (1 ) Staff member in each Division location, and the personnel employed in Garbage Collection services, the Public Works Department close down for a two (2) week period, from July 26th to August 6th, 1982, inclusive. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: In 1981 , in an effort to minimize the disruption in normal works and services, the Public Works Department closed down for a two-week eriod; this was p primarily due to the fact that there are numerous employees of long standing who have three or more weeks entitlement to vacations, and served the purpose of enabling management to better schedule construction and j maintenance work during the balance of the holiday season. Those employees normally providing garbage collection services were not included in the two-week shutdown, and their holidays were able to be scheduled on a rotation basis throughout the summer months. u WD-21-82. - 2 - The method used during 1981 was found to be efficient, and was satisfactory from the standpoint that it greatly reduced the periods of time when the Department was under-staffed due to vacationing employees. In respect of those employees entitled to more than two weeks ' vacation, the balance re- maining was scheduled at off-peak periods, thereby lessening the impact on services. i Respectfully submitted, r I D.T. Gray, C.E.T. Deputy Director of Public Works. March 16, 1982. :vh
