SUBJECT: Mosport Signing - Highway 401. BACKGROUND: During 1978 and 1979 the Ministry of Transportation & Communic- ations undertook to update and standardize the signing of Highway 401 within the Town of Newcastle and numerous meetings were held at which Ministry personnel demonstrated the various proposed changes, and the Town was invited to provide input. At that time, and until the actual signing was in place in late 1979, several specific requests were received relative to indiv- ual areas of concern and, among those considered, was one from the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn. Mr. James J. Bourke, writer of a letter to Council, dated 24th September, 1980, is requesting that the sign presently reading: "Mosport - Waverley Road Exit" should be amended to read: 'Ibsport - Next Tao Exits", thus including Liberty Street. I REPORT: i The above request has -been referred for a report to the Public Works Committee. It should be noted that the present request is identical to that which was put to the Ministry of Transportations & Communications j in October of 1979, at which time it was denied due to it being in direct conflict with Ministry Policy. A letter specifying the reasons for the denial was received by the Public Works Committee on November 5, 1979; this is attached hereto for reference purposes. RECOMMENDATION: THAT the Ministry of Transportation & Communications be advised of the request for additional sigrring and a copy of this report be forwarded to them for information. i 9 November 5, 1900 Mr. P. M2N 6E9 November 13, 1980 Mrs. G.E. Gray, Deputy Clerk/ Committee Secretary, Town of Newcastle, 40 Temperance Street, Bowmanville, Ontario. L1C 3A6 Dear Mrs. Gray: Y Re: Mosport Signing -. Highway 401 This is further to your letter of November 5, 1980, and the Public Works Committee Report of October 21, 1980, concerning a request from Mr. J.J. Bourke for alternate route signs for Mosport on Highway 401. l The Ministry's policy concerning major sports events or attractions has not changed since my letter of October 10, 1979. The signing of Mosport in itself was an exception to Ministry policy which was made to relieve the congestion that was created in Bowmanville by Mosport traffic. As a result, there will be no change in the existing Mosport signing. Yours truly, r P. Howes, Area Traffic Analyst, For: R.A. Shannon, n+ l Regional Traffic Engineer. PH/jar i cc. J.E. Gleason M.J.
