Subject: Vacations - 1981.
Recommendation:
THAT, with the exception of one (1) Staff member in each Division,
and personnel employed in Garbage Collection, the Public Works
Department close down for a two (2) week period, from July 27th
to August 7th, 1981.

Report:
Upon a review of the 1980 Vacation Schedule for employees of the
Public Works Department it was found that a total of 605 man days
were indicated for vacation purposes. As a result, the Department
is required to function short-staffed for a considerable period
of time throughout the year.
It is considered that, in order to maintain an efficient level of
service, it would be beneficial to close down the operations for
two weeks, which would result in greatly reduced periods of time
when the Department runs under--staffed; there would, of course,
still remain residual vacations due, but the effect of a shut-
down would lessen the impact of same.
