CSD-06-02 PAGE 2 1.0 BACKGROUND 1.1 The Community Services Department is again partnering with The Clarington "Racing Against Drugs" Program Plauning Committee in organizing the Third Annual "Racing Against Drugs" Program. 1.2 The event, running June 11-13, 2002 at the Gamet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, will see fifteen hundred grade five students participate. The respective Boards of Education, in Clarington, will transport the students to the Complex. 1.3 The program, through a variety of "interactive" pit stops, promotes awareness and safety issues relating to drug, alcohol and tobacco use. 2.0 PROGRAM 2.1 Through the involvement of the respective school boards, educational resource packages are being prepared in advance of the program. The program is offered in the format of an automobile race where students from pit stop to pit stop where they will be educated on various aspects of substance abuse. Each pit stop is sponsored by a related agency. 2.2 The program sponsors expect to include racecar celebrities as well as members of the various agencies to speak to the children regarding drug and substance abuse. Prizes will be offered to the participants as they compete in the program. Program displays will be both interactive and static and may include actual racecars used at Mosport International Raceway as well as other emergency services vehicles. 2.3 Current partners and sponsors for the program are: Durham Region Health Department Durham Regional Police Services Royal Canadian Mounted Police Ontario Provincial Police Municipality of Clarington Municipality of Clarington - Emergency and Fire Services Laidlaw Education Services Royal Bank of Canada Baskets For All Mosport International Raceway Brine Canada Fraser Ford Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board Peterborough - Victoria - Northumberland - Clarington Catholic District School Board And members of the community 2.4 Insurance, first aid and security for the program will also be arranged by the Plauning Committee. 1002
