TOWN OF NEWCASTLE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
Director's Report to Public Works Committee of September 2, 1980.
ITEM: WD-98-80.
DATE: August 18, 1980,
SUBJECT: Reconstruction of Highway 2.
IvUC. Project 110-72-01.
Oshawa Townline to Regional Road 57.
BACKGROUND:
At the Meeting of June 26, 1980, the Public Works Committee passed
Resolution # 14-168-80, as follows:
" THAT the DikeetoA o A Pubt i.c Works Uais e
with the M-inistAy o4 TAav,6poAtati.on and
Communicationz ne. the extension and/oa
o.theA sidewath utevant to this subject,
and nepon.t back".
REPORT:
The attached correspondence indicates that, if the TowR wants pro-
vision for sidewalks only, the Ministry will provide a 3.75 metre
platform back of pavement, including property purchase, subject to
hearings.
The relevant areas are defined as those sections from Townline to.
460 metres east of Courtice Road, both sides, and from Solina Road
to Maple Grove Road, north side only.
The Ministry are now seeking information from the Town regarding
the construction of sidewalks and, if they are to be under the
Ministry Contract, they will be included at the Town's request
and cost.
The section of Highway 2 from Townline Road to Darlington Boulevard
consists mostly of coimiercial development which, in my opinion, has
pointed out the need for sidewalks. It is felt that this matter
should be considered when financially possible.
RECOMMENDATION:
1. THAT provisions for sidewalks only be provided by the
Ministry, in accordance with their letter of August 11, 1980,
2. THAT sidewalks be considered in conjunction with future
development, and when deemed to be financially feasible.
