HomeMy WebLinkAboutWD-108-78 No. 108 TOWN OF NEWCASTLE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT Director's Report to Public Works Committee. Item: # W-390-78 Date: December 8, 1978. Subject: Home Smith Subdivision, Lot 21, Orono. Background: A recommendation of the Planning & Development Committee, to Council, was referred to the Public Works Committee, and con- sisted of the following:- (1) That a pedestrian walkway be established on Lot 21 and the remainder of the lot be develop- ed as a tot lot. (2) Improve the portion of Robin's Road abutting Block F by extending the curbs on Taunton Road, thereby improving the turning radius at the intersection. Report: A ten (10) foot easement exists on the north side of the sub- ject lot which provides for a storm sewer. If a pedestrian walkway is considered adjacent to the north limits of the lot it would be directly over the existing storm sewer. Note: - If the walkway is established, street lighting will be required at the south-east end. It also should be noted that there are no sidewalks on Mill Street, in the immediate area of the pro- posed walkway. Total estimated cost to construct the subject walkway is $4,425. 00 (including fencing on one side of the walkway). {, 'i v / 2 . . . {e JY - No. 108 - 2 - Improvements to that portion of Robin's Road abutting Block F, by extending the curbs, could create an elevation problem, whereas the existing elevation of Robin's Road is not sufficient to allow drainage from Taunton Road, southerly, to the Creek. A spillway would be required in the curb, approximately ninety (90) feet from the creek, to allow for drainage. Recommendation: a) THAT, if a pedestrian walkway is constructed, it be constructed on the west side of Lot 21, adjacent to the Cemetery. The existing fence adjacent to the Cemetery be replaced with a chain link fence. b) THAT funds expended on the proposed walkway be from other sources. c) THAT no action be taken regarding extending the curbs on Robin's Road, but it be left in it's existing condition (which was in accordance with the Development Agreement at that time) .
