REPORT # 77 Sc' >tember `i 1978

lt? To: Chairman & Members of the Public Works Committee.
a from: J. Dunham, Director of Public Works.
Subject: Highway No. 2. Widening; - Sidewalk Location.
Proposal submitted by Ministry of Transportation
& Communications on August 17, 1978,
Resolution # W-271-78 referred the matter of the sidewalks for
review and a Report.
The Ministry of Transportation & Communications has proposed a
sidewalk along the north side of Highway 2, within the Urban
sections only, with the Rural sections to remain with open ditch
construction. The Urban sections are as follows:-
(A) from the Townline Road to Courtice Road (Regional
Road No. 34) .
(B) from Solina Road to, approximately, Maple Grove Road .
Urban Section "A":
It is felt that, with the proposed development within this Section,
a sidewalk on the north side only would not be sufficient.
it is recbmmehded that a sidewalk he constructed on both sides of
the Highway within this entire area , thus allowing better pedestrian
movement and safety, (.Pedestrians would not need to cross the wide
road as often, nor would tli( y he compelled to walk along the boul-
evard on the south side, as would he the case if the present proposal
were Implemented) .
The Ministry is also completing; a report on the need for 'Traffic
Signals at various intersections (e.g. Trull 's Road) . In this regard
it is reconmiended that "Pedestrian Heads" be. installed on such signals
at the relevant Intersections, thereby allowing safer crossings .
Urban Section "B" :
Within this section a sidewalk on the north side only is proposed .
At the present time there are no sidewalks and , if one were to be
installed, It would not lead anywhere. It is also felt that, should a
sidewalk be Installed on the north side only, the resident of the
south side would request a sidewalk vary shortly thereafter.
