Special Advertising Opportunity - Courtice High School
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee
recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report # COD-036-02 be received;
2. THAT a sponsorship of $ 500.00 be approved to support the Courtice High School
Electric Car program.

DISCUSSION:
At the General Purpose and Administration Committee Meeting of Monday June
17,2002, Local Councillor Jane Rowe asked the Municipality of Clarington to consider
sponsoring the Courtice High School Electric Car program. At this time, Council referred the
request to the Corporate Services Department for investigation and response.
Sponsorship is the partnership between a company (in this case the Municipality of
Clarington) and an extemal organization/agency (Courtice High School) by which the company
assists the organization - financially or the equivalent in kind - in exchange for the right to
associate the company name with the project/event. Sponsorship is another form of
advertising as it allows the Municipality to promote its "brand" by having the municipal logo
associated with the electric car program. Every time the electric car competes (2-3 times per
year) or is on public display (6-8 times per year), the Municipality's logo will be right there.
The Communications & Tourism Office has been in contact with Mr. Randie Houghton,
Manufacturing & Welding Teacher at Courtice High School, regarding the needs of the electric
car program. He has informed me that the students complete all aspects of this program in-
house - including all fabrication, welding and machining requirements. Through this
discussion, it is recommended that a maximum sponsorship of $ 500.00 be approved with said
funds being charged to account # 771 0-X-209. The Municipality's logo will be included on the
electric car, the promotional t-shirts and on the soon to be finished specialized transport trailer
that the students are working on. It should be noted that the corporate advertising budget does
include a specific allocation for advertising opportunities that are unknown and/or unforeseen
at the time of striking the budget.
Sponsorship results in a win-win situation for all partners. The Courtice High School's
electric car program gets some much-needed assistance to promote and continue their
successful program. The Municipality has the opportunity to associate itself with a "good news"
opportunity. It is able to give back to the community and is proud to support the talents and
ingenuity of our young people.
