BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: The Provincial government has enacted amendments to the Education Act which provide for the realignment and amalgamation of school boards across the Province . Under this new Act, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Roman Catholic School Board is now known as the English Language District School Board No. 41 and the Northumberland Clarington Board of Education and the Peterborough County Board of Education have been amalgamated to form the English Language District School Board No. 14 . Regulations made under the Education Act set out the procedures for the determination of the number of trustees for each of the new district school boards, as well as the distribution of those trustees within the new district school boards . In accordance with the regulations, meetings were convened with the clerks of the three municipalities with the largest electoral population within each board' s jurisdiction, ie, City of Peterborough, Cobourg and Clarington. Upon reviewing the formulae included in the regulation which is based on population and land area, it has been determined that the Roman Catholic Board will consist of 7 trustees, distributed as follows : City of Peterborough 2 trustees Peterborough County 1 trustee Victoria County 1 trustee Northumberland County 1 trustee Clarington 2 trustees RECYCLE1 -S &.1-CLt -IS PRINTED RECYCLED PAPER Report CD-42-97 - 2 - September 22, 1997 The Public Board will consist of 10 trustees, distributed as follows : City of Peterborough 2 trustees Clarington 2 trustees Port Hope Hope Township Cavan/Millbrook/ North Monaghan 1 trustee Hamilton Township Alnwick Township Cobourg 1 trustee Haldimand Township Village of Colborne Cramahe Township Town of Brighton Brighton Township Murray Township 1 trustee Percy Township Seymour Township Town of Campbellford Village of Hastings Havelock/Belmont/ Methune 1 trustee Otonabee/ South Monaghan Douro/Dummer Village of Lakefield Norwood/Asphodel 1 trustee Galway/Cavendish/ Harvey Burleigh/Anstruther/ Chandos Smith/Ennismore 1 trustee Historically, because of the small number of French supporters within the area of the school boards, the Municipality of Clarington has not elected French trustees . With the amalgamation, Clarington is now included in the French-Language Separate District School Board No. 64 and the French-Language Public District School Board No. 58 (which cover the area from Welland to Peterborough) . For the purpose of the distribution of trustees, the Boards are divided into electoral zones . The lU5 Report CD-42-97 - 3 - September 22 , 1997 municipality within each electoral zone which has the largest eligible electorate is responsible for receiving nomination papers for that zone . In the French-Language Public District School Board No. 58, Clarington is included with Durham, Northumberland and Peterborough and in the French-Language Separate District School Board No. 64, Clarington is included with Peterborough, Victoria and Northumberland. Accordingly, for the French Public Board, nomination papers for the trustee position will be received by the clerk for the City of Oshawa and nomination papers for the trustee position on the French Separate Board will be received by the clerk of the Municipality of Clarington.
