THAT Report CD-11-96 be received for information. INTRODUCTION: At its special meeting on January 12, 1996, staff were asked to provide information to Council concerning the on street parking meters . There appeared to be some confusion as to whether or not the meters would accept any coins other than the $1 . 00 coin. REPORT: There are four different models in use at this time . Two are the older mechanical units, one is electro-mechanical and one is fully electronic . There are also two different time limits offered; one hour on the main downtown streets and two hours on the side streets . The two hour meter is a mechanical unit with two slots for coins . It will accept the 25 and $1 . 00 coins only. The mechanical and the electro-mechanical, one-hour meters each have slots for 5, 10 and 25 coins . i The confusion may involve the fully electronic unit . This has only one slot which is roughly the size of the dollar coin. The coin chute has sensors in it which can identify the type of coin used and can detect fraudulent coins or slugs . In the past, members of the public have complained that they put more than 50 in the meter and did not get any extra time . The meter carries a label clearly identifying it as having a maximum time limit of one hour time. No matter how much money is put in the meter at one time, it will not register more than one hour.
