Meeting: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE File #
Date: NOVEMBER 16, 1992 Res. #( pn -
Report#:_ CD-26-92 File #: By-Law#
Subject: HISTORICAL ASSESSMENT RECORDS AND COLLECTOR'S ROLLS
Recommendations:
It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and
Administration Committee recommend to Council the following:
1. THAT Report CD-26-92 be received for information.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
The Ontario Archives in Toronto contacted Phyllis Dewell, Chairman of
the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC) to
advise that assessment records and collector's rolls for the years 1860
to 1913 (not complete) for the former Townships of Clarke and
Darlington, former Town of Bowmanville and the former Village of
Newcastle had been found in the Cobourg Municipal Office. The Archives
suggested that these records would be a valuable research tool for the
LACAC.
The Chairman has retrieved these documents and, because they are the
Town's records, advised the Clerk's Department of this action. As the
records are very old, they require storage in a climate-controlled
atmosphere. As the Town does not have the appropriate storage
facilities, the curators of the museums were contacted by the Chairman
of LACAC to ascertain whether they could provide proper storage for
these documents . Both museums have adequate facilities and have agreed
to house the documents for the Town. These records have since been
delivered to the museums for safe keeping (Clarke, Darlington and
Newcastle records are at the Clarke Museum and Bowmanville records are
at the Bowmanville Museum) .
Respectfully submitted Recommended for Presentation
