BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
The Thomas Bassett House, located at 73 Temperance Street,
Bowmanville, was designated as being of historical and
architectural value in November 1990. Restoration work has
recently been completed on the exterior of the building and an
application for a Designated Property Grant in the amount of
$3,000 .00 has been submitted.
The Ontario Heritage Act, 1974, states that owners of property
which has been designated under the Act can apply to the
municipality for grants of 50 percent of the total cost of the
work, to a maximum of $3,000 .00 in any calendar year to offset
the cost of restoration work. Once the grant has been paid by
the municipality, application is made to the province for
reimbursement of the entire amount, plus 10 percent to cover
administrative costs .
Report CD-22-91 - 2 - June 3, 1991
Restoration work on the masonry was completed, at a total cost of
$16,840. 00 . The Local Architectural Conservation Advisory
Committee has inspected the work and it is found to be
satisfactory.
It is, therefore, recommended that the grant application
submitted by Mr. and Mrs . Hastie in the amount of $3,000.00 be
approved.
