""-1 """'...'.....-.... iro,.., . "'C". ~';'<" '.' :.,~<.;.._.;-.:-..r:>;0.4,....-""';~~ As per Community Services Department Report #CSD-OS-04, please find attached a nomination form recommending the name of Clarington's new Hockey Museum: Clarington's Brian McFarlane Hockey Museum Staff is recommending this name based on the following criteria. BACKGROUND Staff of the Community Services Department, assisted by the Communications and Marketing Division of Corporate Services is in the process of finalizing marketing plans and promotional material for Clarington's new Hockey Museum. In order to confirm these strategies, approval of a formal name for the museum is required. COMMENTS Council recently approved report CSD-03-04 which outlines a policy for the Naming of Municipal Buildings/Facilities. The policy states the naming process may recognize the elements or component of the facility. Accordingly, the name Clarington's Brian McFarlane Hockey Museum is recommended, as this name identifies Clarington's ownership of the museum, and, Brian McFarlane is a well known celebrity in hockey, having spent nearly all of his life in the sport and 40 years as a broadcaster (27 years with Hockey Night In Canada). Brian McFarlane, while semi-retired is still active as a speaker .and promoter of the humourous side of hockey and the sport lore. The museum has operated as Brian McFarlane's Hockey Museum Inc. for many years; permanently in Colborne, Ontario; as well as travelling exhibits that have toured Sudbury, Scarborough, Markham and the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto. The museum brings its own name recognition. Accordingly, by combining both the municipality's name with the former name, we will continue to enjoy the notoriety and continuity of name recognition by maintaining the name Clarington's Brian McFarlane Hockey Museum. The Municipality of Clarington, through the purchase contract for the museum, enjoys the rights to use Brian McFarlane's name for this purpose. Please advise if any further information is required this recommendation. , , cc: Joseph' . I nominate James C.Coyle, (Jim) Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Died in Bowmanville, Onto July 22, 1911 November 22, 1985 Always known in Bowmanville, as, II Senator Jim " Jim was a very civic-minded citizen of Bowmanville for over 55 years. He moved to Bowmanville in approx. 1930 and lived at Washington Place all his life. He worked at the Goodyear Tire and RURber Company until he retired and was Treasurer of the LOcal Union 189 at the Goodyear Plant for many years. He umpired Baseball in Town but his great love was Hockey and he coached kids hockey for years. If he wasn't at home you could always find him at the Old Arena on Queen Street coaching or watching a Hockey Game. He was a great supporter of Bowmanville and always involved in Town projects and politics. He attended the Council Meetings held Monday nights at the Town Hall and he was on the Recreation Committee for years in Bowmanville. He was a great Sports Fan and an asset to the Town of Bowmanville. His name will be found in the Garnet Rickard arena as a Supporter of the new building. On the Wall of Names who had money donated toward the Arena. You would often find him in Mayor Rickards Office talking over the town affairs together. They were great friends. He was what they called " a straight-shooter" years ago. If he told you he would do something you could count on it. In his later years he formed the Jamboree that was held in the Town Hall on Sunday nights, and people came from far and near to Bowmanville to hear the music. One of the well-known families who appeared on Stage were the LEAHY FAMILY" - who still perform now. He travelled to Fiddle Contests allover Ontario, met Don Messer in person and many other well-known personalities and he always wrote up the results of the fiddle contests and gave the to another friend, Johnny James of the Canadian Statesman. ] have enclosed another picture of him taken with Bobby Hull at the Old Arena on Queen Street. He was a great asset to Hockey in Bowmanville - a good neighbour and friend to all - and I think a good candidate to have his name on the Hockey Museum in Bowmanville. Facilities I would like to submit the name: Brian McFarlane Sports Museum for the new facility being built to house the Brian McFarlane hockey collection. Any Canadian youth who has tuned into CBC's Hockey Night in Canada in the '70's and 80's will recognize the name of Brian McFarlane and his sidekick Peter Puck. They were the predecessors to what are now the Don Cherry and Ron McLean's Coaches Comer, I feel that Brian McFarlane embodies the spirit of the average Canadian whose love of sports in particular hockey has enabled him to pursue his dream of playing our national sport to a junior level then coming into our households and broadcasting mostly Toronto Maple Leaf games every Wednesday and Saturday evenings. His position of privilege has enabled him to meet and come to know our hockey heroes in a way that every Canadian would like to be able to do. Through these associations, he has been able to gather many artifacts pertaining to hockey. Clarington is very fortunate to have been selected by Me, McFarlane to house his collection, which is now considered apart of hockey history. Mr. McFarlane has taken a love of writing, which he must have inherited, from his father, Leslie McFarlane, and written many books about the sport of hockey and its many stars of the game. The name Brian McFarlane should be a drawing card in itself and I feel that since the new building will house his collection of hockey memorabilia, it should carry his name. lJ'71f~ /J ()V Willie Woo Enc1 .
