CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT D,N.SMITH, M.C.I.P., Director
HAMPTON, ONTARIO LOB 1 JO TEL.(416)263-2231
REPORT TO THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING OF JANUARY
5, 1981.
REPORT NO. : P-3-81
SUBJECT: Highway 401 - Mosport Park Signing
BACKGROUND:
On October 20, 1980 a letter from Mr. James J. Bourke,
President and General Manager of the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn was
submitted to Council for consideration. In his letter, Mr. Bourke
had requested that a sign located on Highway 401 presently reading:
"Mosport - Waverley Road Exit" be changed to read: "Mosport - Next
Two Exits". At the Council meeting of October 20, 1980, the following
resolution was adopted by Council:
"That the letter dated September 24, 1980 from the
President of the Flying Dutchman Motor Inn regarding
events at Mosport be referred to the Public Works
Committee, the Planning and Development Committee
and the Finance and Administration Committee for
report to Council."

COMMENT:
Staff have reviewed the request submitted by Mr.
Bourke and note that a similar request made in October of 1979, was
denied as being contrary to Ministry of Transportation and Communication
policy. Staff note that in the attached letter from the Ministry of
October, 1979, it is stated that 401 exits are signed only to indicate
the number of interchanges serving the populated area of a municipality
and not for special events, or places to see, etc. The existing Mosport
Park sign is an exception to the Ministry's policies since Mosport is
a permanent facility and has existed for a number of years.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended that:
1. This report be received for information and
forwarded to Council for consideration in con-
junction with the reports from the Public Works
and Finance and Administration Committees.
Respectfully submitted,
