(416)263-2231 REPORT TO THE PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE MEETING OF FEBRUARY 18, 1980. REPORT NO. : P-25-80 SUBJECT: Bowmanville Creek — Name Change File: C-K-1-1 BACKGROUND: At the Committee meeting of October 5, 1979, the proposed name change from Bowmanville Creek to Barber Creek was last discussed. At that time, the Committee forwarded a copy of staff report P-117-79 to the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee for their infor- mation. (copy attached) In response to that report, and earlier discussions relative to the naming of geographic features, the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee has advised that it is their recommendation that the name of Bowmanville Creek remain unchanged. COMMENTS: In view of the fact that L.A.C.A.C. does not endorse the pro- posed name change and the fact that naming of geographic features is the responsibility of the Ontario Geographic Names Board; which Board has previously indicated that Bowmanville Creek is the currently approved c I . name resulting from common local usage, and is the form the Board would likely retain; it does not appear that any further action is required in respect of this matter. However, if the Committee or Council see merit in requesting a name change, then it would be necessary to forward an appropriate resolution to the Ontario Geographic Names Board. RECOMMENDATION: That the Planning and Development Committee recommend to Council that this report be received for information. Respectfully submitted, TTE:lb D. N. Smith, M.C.I.P. REPORT NO. : P-177-79 SUBJECT: Bowmanville Creek - Name Change BACKGROUND: In February of this year, the Town received a briel from the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee rela ive to a suggested name change from Bowmanville Creek to the hist ric name of Barber's Creek. As a result of this brief, the Town Manager and S I olicitor were requested to advise Council on how to proceed with t I he subject i request. In accordance with -drat direction, the Town Cleric contacted the Ontario Geographic Names Board, which 'is the statutory authority responsible for the control of names and naming of geographic features. In response to the Town's enquiry, the Ontario Geoglraphic Names Board forwarded a copy of their Principles of Geographic Naming and an application form concerning the request. This information was pre-- I stinted to the Planning Committee on March 19, 1979 at which time, it was s I I recommended , that the Clerk liaise with L.A.C.A.C. and report back to the Committed. On March 27, 1979, Mr. Mcllroy wrote to I.,.A.C.A.C. requesting them: conunents and opinion; to date, we have not received their reply.
