Res. # /� j By-Law # MEETING: GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE DATE: MAY 20, 1986 REPORT #: CD-30-86 FILE #: 10.12.4. SL6JECT: LETTER TO VARIOUS ORGANIZATIONS, ENCOURAGING A REVIEW OF THEIR ADVERTISING POLICY RESPECTING THE MEMBERSHIP OF BOARDS OF MANAGEMENT. RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Administration Committee recommend the following to Council : 1 . That Report CD-30-86 be received; and 2. That the form of the letter dealing with the subject be approved; and 3. That a copy of the letter be mailed to all Boards and Committees appointed by Council in the Town of Newcastle. BACKGROUND AND COMMENT: Council at the meeting of April 28th 1986, adopted the Report of the Striking Committee (CD-23-86) , and approved the recommendations contained in it. Recommendation Number Four (4) provided: "THAT a letter be drafted to the various organizations encouraging a review of their advertising policy as it relates to seeking positions on their Management Boards." A subsequent amendment directed: "THAT the said draft letter be brought to the General Purpose and Administration Committee Meeting for review." Continued .. . . .12 Report CD-30-86 - 2 - May 20, 1986 �-- As directed, a letter has been prepared, which it is hoped, will encourage the response envisaged by recommendation four (4) of the Striking Committee Report. The subject letter is i'n draft form and is attached for the Committee's review, and if it is satisfactory the letter will be forwarded to the various organizations in the Town whose Boards and Committees are approved by Council. Commissions and Committees in the Town of Newcastle, Our File:. 10.12.4 You are aware that every year Newcastle Town Council advertises for applicants from the public, and subsequently appoints residents of the municipality to the various boards, commissions and committees that carry out many public functions in the community on behalf of Council . These appointments provide interested, public spirited citizens with an opportunity to volunteer their skills and become involved in some facet of local government. Town Council wishes to assure that the composition of its many boards, commissions and committees reflect the multi-faceted nature of this unique municipality and to that end, the Members of Council , collectively, would encourage your organization to review your advertising policy and/or the manner in which your executive body is selected, with a view to encouraging the �� residents .of the community to come forward and participate in the evolutionary development of the social fabric of the Town of Newcastle.
