By-Law # MEETING: COUNCIL DATE: January 13th, 1986 REPORT #: Mayor's Report #2-86 FILE #: SUB.JECT: Development of a Distinctive Municipal Logo { RECOMMENDATIONS: It is respectfully recommended to Council the following: 1 . That this report be received; and 2. That an official "Logo" be designed for the Town of Newcastle; and 3. That the members of the community be invited to participate in the process by submitting proposals for a logo; and 4. That a prize of $50.00 be awarded to the person submitting the successful design. BACKGROUND-AND-COMMENT: The Town of Newcastle has during the last few years established: a. a floral symbol ; b. a lapel pin (both corporate seal and flower); and. c. a municipal flag. While each of these symbols plays a part in identifying and promoting the Town of Newcastle, none of them is designed in such a way that they are instantly recognizable. Logos are, generally speaking, a stylized piece of art work which carry withiin, ithem instantly recognizable segments that relate to a specific place. It is appropriate, therefore, that this Municipality undertake the development of a distinctive symbol for use in association with municipal business activities. Simplicity of design is the major consideration and, in that regard, it would be reasonable to limit design proposals to three criteria: Mayor's Report 2-86 Page 2. Development of a Distinctive Municipal Logo a) Visual identification of the present Municipality; b) Contain symbolic reference to the four predecessor Municipalities; c) Be limited to a maximum of four colours. Finally, to stimulate public interest in the proposal , Council should award a prize of $50.00 to the person submitting the winning design. Respectfully submitted, E J fiN INTERS, Mayor JW/mr i I i I
