SUBJECT: Application for Taxi Fare Increase
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That a fare increase as detailed in Report CD-13-83 be
approved; and
3. That By-law No. 74-72 be amended to provide for the fare
increase; and
4. That Mrs. Christine Knowler, Deluxe Taxi , Bowmanville, and
Mr. Tom Van Der Ende, Bowmanville Taxi , Bowmanville, be so
advised.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
By letter dated December 9th 1983, Mrs. Christine Knowler, Deluxe Taxi , 9
Silver Street, Bowmanville, wrote to this office on behalf of her company and
Bowmanville Taxi , requesting that consideration be given to the increasing
of taxi fares in the Town of Newcastle.
The last fare increase was approved by Council and implemented by the
passage of by-law 80-11, on February 11, 1980.
Following receipt of the fare increase request, a review of taxi fares in
nine other municipalities was carried out. The results of the review are
shown on the chart attached to this report.
As members of the Committee will appreciate, costs have increased significantly
in the last few years and an increase in taxi fares requested by the Taxi
Companies is not unreasonable. The tariff established by Council in 1980 and
the recommended increase are shown in the schedule attached to this report as ,
Tariff "A".

If the Committee agrees with the recommendations, it would also be appropriate
that the by-law attached to this report be recommended to Council for approval .
