CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF NEWCASTLE lCl.
OFFICE OF THE TOWN CLERK
TELEPHONE 623-3379
40 TEMPERANCE STREET
BOWMAN L1 C 3A6 ONTARIO
REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF
SEPTEMBER 13, 1982
CD-57-82
Our File: 10.2. 11.
SUBJECT: ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION BRANCH 178
REMEMBRANCE WEEK ACTIVITIES
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That permission be granted to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 178,
to sell poppies in the Town of Newcastle during the period
November 1st to November 6th 1982 inclusive; and
3. That the Town of Newcastle arrange for the printing of programs,
advertising of the Remembrance Day ceremonies; and the bagging of
parking meters on Temperance Street between King and Church Streets
for the duration of the cenotaph ceremony; and
4. That the Legion be required to provide a sound system; and
5. That the Durham Regional Police be advised of the schedule of events.
i
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
In past years, the Town of Newcastle has provided the Royal Canadian
Legion Branch 178 with the following:
1. Printing of programs at the Town's expense;
2. Publication of advertisements announcing the time and location
of ceremonies within the Town of Newcastle;

3. Public Address Sound System;
4. Controlled parking on Temperance Street for the duration of
the parade and cenotaph ceremony;
5. Permission to sell poppies prior to Remembrance Day.
This Department has anticipated certain requirements related to this year's
services and has provided funds in the budget to cover:
(a) The cost of programs $100.00
(b) The cost of advertising $100.00
Because this is an election year, and Remembrance Day falls on the
Saturday prior to Election Day, staff will not be available to operate
the public address system. It would be appropriate in the circumstances,
that the Legion arrange for both the public address system and an
operator.
Respectfully submitted,
David W. Oakes, A.M.C.T.
Town Clerk..
