REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE MEETING OF
JULY 26, 1982
CD-51-82
OUR FILE: 10.50.3
SUBJECT: VOTER NOTIFICATION OF THE POLLING PLACE
1982 MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. That this report be received; and
2. That the Committee recommend that Council pass a
by-law to provide for the notification of resident
electors of the location of the polling place.
(By-law No. 82- lr, attached) .
BACKGROUND AND COMMENT:
The Municipal Elections Act, SO1977, requires that a voter notification card
be mailed or delivered to all electors advising them of the polling place
at which they may vote and, that a by-law be passed by Council before
September 1st in an election year authorizing and approving the manner in
which notice is given.
The Act also provides two alternative methods relating to the manner in which
notice is given:
1. To each elector;
2. To all electors at a given address.

In recent elections, it has been determined that the mailing or delivery of
a single notice to all electors resident at a given address has been both
effective and significantly less costly.
The Town of Newcastle has followed this practice and it is appropriate that
consideration be given to permitting the practice to continue with respect
to the next Municipal Election to be held in November, 1982.
Attached for the Committee' s review and approval is a by-law which would
permit the Clerk to give notice to electors in accordance with alternative
two.
Respectfully submitted,
