That report TR-106-86 be received; and 2. That the proposal from M.A.I. Canada Limited to install a communication system to support computer equipment at various locations within the Town be approved; and 3. That the funds expended be drawn from the Administration Improvement Reserve Fund - #1110-X-168-4. r BACKGROUND & COMMENT The recent acquisition of a computer system and the fact that the Town's lease with Real Time will soon be terminated, necessitates the need to acquire a communication system. Communications is the ability for one electronic device to communicate with another electronic device. Whether these devices are in a local office, or in a branch office, all involve communications. Examples of communications include the ability to hook up remote terminals and printers to the main C.P.U. (central processing unit) , the ability to send information from one computer to another and the ability to hook numerous devices such as terminals and printers together in what is called a network. Communications between a remote computer device and the main system require the use of a special electronic device called a modem and where necessary multiplexors. Modems transfer the information from the Computer into a state in which telephone lines can transmit data to a remote terminal. G.P.A. Meeting (Page 2) Dec. 15/86 Multiplexers involve the connection of remote clusters of data terminal equipment within a department to the centralized computer system. A modem and multiplexor is needed at each end of a communication link. Quotations were invited for the supply and installation of a communication system to meet the Town's requirements. Quotations were received and tabulated as follows: M.A.I. Canada Ltd. 26,910 Gandalf Data Ltd. 28,094 (Data Line Charge not included) Bell Canada Equipment not supplied After review and analysis of the quotations by the Treasurer and Chief Administrative Officer, it was mutually agreed that M.A.I. Canada Limited be authorized to supply and install a communication system to support the Town's computer requirements. Respectfully submitted, VIClal .R.
