REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
COMMITTEE - MEETING OF JANUARY 3, 1984.

SUBJECT: Completion of Central Dispatch -
Reel to reel , 4 channel recording
system from the Ontario Fire Marshals Office.
RECOMMENDATION:

BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS
The central dispatch system has been completed by Bell Canada. All emergency calls
to the Fire Department in the Municipality are now answered twenty-four hours a day
by answering service personnel located in Bowmanville. The system has been in opera-
tion for the past three weeks and is proving to be very effective.
In correspondence and conversation with the Office of the Fire Marshal , I have been
able to obtain a 4 channel , reel to reel recording system, which is being installed
in Fire Station #1 . This system y tem will record all incoming emergency calls on either
of the three emergency phone lines and also records radio transmissions from the

vehicles or fire stations. It is a very necessary and vital piece of equipment for
documentation of emergency calls and immediate playback if additional information
is required relating to the emergency.

There will be no cost involved with obtaining this equipment from the Fire Marshal 's

Office as this particular piece of equipment has been classed as surplus. Instal-
lation cost and maintenance will be the responsibility of this Department.
New recording systems have been viewed by myself with approximate cost ranging
from $14,000.00 to $18,000.00, which would be far beyond our financial capabili-
ties. This new system should prove to be beneficial for many years.
I have taken the liberty of writing to Mr. Alan Dupuis, Chief Fire Advisory Ser-
vices of the Ontario Fire Marshal 's Office, thanking him and the Ontario Fire
Marshal 's Office on behalf of the Town of Newcastle Fire Department for their help
in obtaining this recording system.
