TOWN OF NEWCASTLE
REPORT TO GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
COMMITTEE - MEETING OF OCTOBER 3, 1983.
REPORT NO. FD 14-83
SUBJECT: Emergency Telephone Service Lines Bell Canada
Station #2, Newcastle - 987-4211
Station #3, Orono - 983-5302
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended:
THAT the fire emergency telephone lines for
Station #2, Newcastle and Station #3, Orono,
be relocated and installed in Central Dis-
patch, Bowmanville.
BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS
In 1974, when the Fire Departments were amalgamated in the Town of Newcastle,
information was compiled to have one communication and alerting system for
all fire stations. Over a period of years equipment was purchased for each
station and in 1981 all stations and mobile unit installations were completed.
The present fire emergency telephone system consists of three separate systems
with the emergency telephone lines for Newcastle and Orono depending on the
part-time volunteer fire fighters answering telephones in their homes, then
running to the fire station to tone the alerting system. On completion of
construction of the new fire station in Orono, central toning will be required
in order to alert the volunteers.
At present, all facilities are existing in the answering service and at all
fire stations for tone alerting and radio communications.

Six button telephones will be installed in each location (3) for the answer-
ing service. The existing Bowmanville and Darlington lines will be left as
is, with the same emergency numbers, 987-4211 and 983-5302, being installed
on the other two buttons, leaving two spare buttons if required in the future.
The emergency telephone numbers will not be changed for residents in the
Villages of Orono and Newcastle and the whole of Clarke Township.
The establishment of Central Dispatch telephone emergency lines monthly Bell
Canada rate will be less than the existing systems, more efficient operation,
with personnel on duty 24 hours a day.
