President of the Canadian Firefighter's Museum, who has no problem
complying with Committee' s loan requirements and is in agreement
with the attached two year loan agreement.
There has also been a written request received from the Station #2
Firefighters' Association asking if this old fire wagon could be
moved from Fire Station #2, to improve the working area of the
Station.
After a fire, hoses have to be washed, then laid out on the floor
to drain and dry, and equipment has to be cleaned. The old hose
wagon does contribute, to some degree, to congestion in the working
area, which could be improved by removing it from this Station.
The question then arises of where to store it?
In view of the foregoing, I would recommend consideration of this
proposal , to ensure the preservation of this historical fire
wagon.
For Committee's information, I have attached copies of the previous
request, Fire Department Report and the proposed loan agreement.
Respectfully submitted,
J. Al ridge,
Fire Chief.

REPORT TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION
COMMITTEE MEETING - JULY 16, 1984.
REPORT NO: FD 17-84.
SUBJECT: Long term l.oan of the 1800 Fire Wagon
to the Canadian Firefighters Museum.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended:-
1 . ) THAT this report be received;
2. ) THAT the General Purpose and Administration
Committee recommend to Council that the 1800
Bowmanville Fire Wagon be made available to
the Canadian Firefighters Museum for display
on a long term loan basis.
------------------------------------- .---------------------- --------------
BACKGROUND'AW COMMENTS:
. The unit in question is an old horse drawn fire wagon, which would have been
in service in Bowmanville around the early 1800 period. The unit was stored
in a shed for a number of years by the Bowmanville Museum. It took up a
great deal of space and they have shown no interest in wanting to display it.
Attached is a letter from the Bowmanville Museum indicating that they have
given this unit back to the Fire Department, to use at our discretion.
Actually, the unit has been stored at Fire Station #2 for approximately the
past three years because of lack of somewhere to display it and preserve it
at the same time.

A request has been received from the Canadian Firefighters Museum Chair-
man, Mr. J. Holden, a copy of which I have attached. This museum is ex-
tremely interested in acquiring the unit on a loan basis, to display in
their new museum in the Port Hope area.
I would recommend consideration of this proposal to ensure the preservation
of this historical unit and to make it available for public display representing
the horse drawn era of fire fighting for this area. This is strictly on a
loan. basis and the unit would be returned, when requested, to the Town of
Newcastle.
Respectfully submitted,
J. Aldridge,
Fire Chief.

Dear Chief Aldridge;
Last month the Canadian Fire Fighters Museum was incorporated
by the Ontario government . The Museum Board is now embarking
on a fund-raising campaign and gathering a collection of fire
apparatus and equipment for display.
Last week I viewed with pleasure the antique hose wagon currently
stored at the Newcastle village fire hall and in my opinion this
rig would make an excellent display in the Museum. The rig is
generally sound and well preserved and ideally represents the
horse-drawn era of fire fighting in this region.
Therefore I request that your municipality strongly consider
making this unit available to the Museum for display. We expect
to be in operation in an interim facility shortly.
Thank you for the opportunity to express a strong interest in
this historic vehicle .

Chairman of the Board .

Dear Chief Aldridge ;
The Board of Directors of the Canadian Fire Fighters
Museum respectfully requests that your Fire Department
loan its horse drawn hose wagon to the Museum for a
period of at least two years.
While the Museum collection is covered by insurance
and every precaution would be taken by the Museum to
protect the unit from damage , it is assumed that the
owner would retain coverage as well under its present
arrangement .
While displayed, the unit would be signed to fully
describe it and credit ownership to its Fire Department .
The unit could be removed from the collection, for
example to participate in a parade in Bowmanville ,
if the Museum receives notice of two weeks to make
suitable arrangements.
Any minor maintenance on the unit while in the Museum' s
care would be done at the Museum' s expense .
It is out intent to display this unit at planned
exhibits this year. Thank you for your consideration
in this matter.
Yours sincerely,
r
John L. Holden,
President.

Dear Jim:
The men at Station 2, Newcastle, have asked me to
inquire as to whether any arrangements have been made
to move the old Horse Drawn BYD wagon from our hall.
During the past few months, when we have returned
from some calls, we have had several lengths of hose to
wash and to dry. Once washed we need room to lay the
hoses out to dry and we do all this in the west bay of
hall 2.
At one time there was some tall; of removing this
wa4;on from the Hall and we were all wondering; if anything
further to this matter has been discussed.
We would certainly appreciate you looking into this
matter for us and we will be .looking forward to hearing
from you in the near future.
Thank you for your trouble.
Sincerely,
Samuel Brereton, District Chief
Fire Station #2
