TOWN OF CASTLE
GENERAL PURPOSE AND ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MEETING - JULY 15, 1985.
REPORT NO. FD 14-85.
SUBJECT: Home Fire Inspection Program.
RECOMMENDATION:
It is respectfully recommended:
THAT this report be received for information.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS
The voluntary home fire inspection program, which was carried out during
the month of June proved to be successful this year. There were many
positive comments from Town residents. The Department received numerous
calls for inspections, where the residents were not at home at the time
of the initial visit and requested a followup inspection.
A total of 835 home inspections were conducted throughout the Town of
Newcastle. One of the most common faults identified during the program
was that home smoke detectors would not function because of dead bat-
teries or no batteries at all . Literature was given out to all homes
inspected, relating to the use and operation of smoke detectors. Also,
Fire Department emergency telephone stickers were handed out.
This program is not only generating public interest, but is also assisting
the part-time firefighters in broadening their knowledge of Fire Depart-

ment operations, which they are keenly interested in.
Respectfully submitted,
J: Aldridge,
Fire Chief.
