FILE #: 10.12.6. SUBJECT: DISPOSAL OF 1950 PUMPER UNIT V. RECOMMENDATI0NS: It is respectfully recommended that the General Purpose and Admini- stration Committee recommend to Council the following: 1 . ) THAT Fire Department Report No. 28-86 be received; 2. ) THAT the 1950 G.M.C. Pumper, Unit #7, be sold to the Firefighters' Association of Station #1 , the Alert Fire Company, for the nominal fee of $1 .00, (as is condition, uncertified and not licenced) ; and 3. ) THAT this sale transaction take place after delivery of the new tanker truck. i BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS The pumper Unit #7 is a 1950 G.M.C. , which is not in active service, but has been main- tained as a standby unit for the past number of years. The pumper is in good mechanical condition but because of its age (36 years) would not meet the Insurance Advisory Rating for a Class A Pumper. Mechanical parts for repairs are non-existent and for these reasons replacement was approved in the 1985 capital budget. With the purchase of the new vehicle and expected delivery in early 1987, it would be in the best interests of the Department to make Unit #2, a 1959 pumper and newer model , the standby unit. In this regard, the Department has received two letters requesting the purchase of the 1950 pumper. One letter came from the Firefighters' Association of Station #1 , known as the Alert Fire Company, and the other from the members of the General Motors Fire Depart- ment (letters attached) . Continued . . . . . . . CC> FD 28-86 - 2 - A few years ago, a 1940 fire truck was sold to the Firefighters' Association at Station #2 for the nominal fee of $1 .00, uncertified and not licenced. The 1950 G.M.C. pumper was an original Town of Bowmanville Fire Department vehicle and in the interests of the Alert Fire Company and the community I recommend that it be sold to this Association in the same manner as Station #2, for their use in parades and promotional functions such as fund raising for Muscular Dystrophy. I would note that the actual dollar value of this pumper is undetermined, but it is not of the antique class because of its age. Respectfully submitted, r J. Aldridge, Fire Chief. JA/sr Encls. It is our understanding that this truck is no longer required for active service by the Town and our group is interested in acquiring such a vehicle manufactured by General Motors of Canada, for purposes of participating in fire service competitions and musters and for general public parades and displays. We would appreciate it if pp you could provide us with the selling price and details of the process required to make an offer to purchase. Please forward such correspondence to my attention at the address above. Should this purchase take place, we plan to have an engraved brass plaque mounted on the truck outlining its origin and past service. Our members feel that it is the responsibility of professional firefighters to preserve and promote the history of Canadian fire service. We appreciate any assistance you can offer in helping us to attain our goal and look forward to your reply. G✓Y Larry J.
