BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS As discussed during the budget meetings, the Durham Regional Police will be vacating their portion of the Police/Fire building sometime in 1986. In conversation with Deputy Police Chief Robinson, he indicated that the new police station will be completed sometime in June and at that time the move will take place. In Staff opinion, it was felt that considering this time frame a report should be submitted outlining the proposed Fire Department plans for this area. Continued. . . . . I I FD - 17 - 2 - Cont'd. The area suggested for Fire Department use is directly behind the Fire Chief' s and Secre- tary's office wall . It is presently used for the Police lunch/meeting room and locker/- shower room. It is proposed that the lunch/meeting room area be converted to Fire Department general office floor space, permitting our offices to be located on one floor area and away from the present damp basement. There are presently no shower facilities or change rooms for our firefighters, so the existing police facilities will serve our requirements. The lack of shower facilities has been an ongoing concern with the Fire Department and the Occupational Health and Safety Committee. Because of potential exposure of firefighters, in the performance of their duties, to hazardous materials and chemicals, provision should be in place to )ermit firefighters to shower and change clothing before leaving the station, thus elimi- nating any possibility of carrying contaminants on clothing home. Attached are floor plans of the existing and proposed changes. Renovation costs would include the construction of additional walls, doors, removal of an existing wall and painting throughout, the paint being in extremely poor condition. Estimated cost for the complete renovation is $3,000.00, considering that Fire Department staff are used to provide the labour. This additional office space would greatly improve the Fire Department' s office function and give the Department the required shower/change room facilities.
