BACKGROUND AND COMMENTS
The Durham Region Fire Chiefs' Association is promoting Fire Safety
through a poster competition at the grade five level. The contest
is held on a Municipal, then Regional level and I would request
Council's support, as in the past, for this contest.
Last year there was a tremendous response from schools throughout our
Municipality. The quality, workmanship, time and effort devoted to
the making of the posters was an indication of the great student and
teacher interest. The winner of last year's girls' category, at
the Regional level, was Miss Angie Prybich, who attends Newcastle
Public School. This poster contest forms part of our Department's
school program directed at grade five students, to help increase fire
safety awareness.
FD 6-88 - 2 -
The poster contest would commence at the local level with grade five
students submitting posters to be judged by the Town of Newcastle Fire
Department District Chiefs. The two winners, one girl and one boy,
would be presented with their awards, $25.00 each, a plaque and a
school plaque. The two winning posters would then be submitted by
the Fire Department to the Regional Fire Chiefs' Poster Competition
as this Municipality's entries.
The proposed contest would commence immediately, with the judging to
take place on March 30, 1988 at Fire Station #1.
Respectfully submitted, Recommended for presentation
